JQM LITERARY CHAT WELCOMES J.M. Lively
TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:
Jonathon Lively (J.M. Lively) was born and raised in California. After moving through several cities and states he settled down in Grand Forks, North Dakota. There, he met his wife Brittany, and together they started a family. Over the years of moving, attempting to be an artist, and living life by the seed of his pants, Jonathon collected pages upon pages of inspiration for characters. He was heavily influenced by comics, anime, and manga. A lot of those ideas were meant to be drawn, tattooed, or designed with computer graphics. Instead, he took those characters and small snippets of story and combined them all into one HUGE document. It took Jonathon three months in 2018 to comb through all the information but when he was done, he had an outline for the series, The Oreniah Codex. From there, he started writing the story. Then, in August of 2019, he published his first book, The Last Soul. Now, Jonathon lives in Bemidji, Minnesota with his family and continues to explore the universe of Oreniah, through writing novels.
WHAT INFLUENCED YOU TO WRITE YOUR GENRE(S)?
I started writing in the Fantasy genre because it is basically all I read. Except for some self-help/business books, I read for entertainment. I like to escape to a new world. I love the idea of magic and imagining how it would work blended with today’s society. When I first started writing fantasy, it was a background story on a character I was going to play for a DND campaign. Later that night I turned in a ten-page backstory that made my Dungeon Master want to puke it was so long. But for me, it was just the start. Three days later, I had about sixty-seven pages written on a character that I’d never thought about before. I did not research, I had no pre-determined goal, and there was no outline. I just wrote.
WHO ARE YOUR FAVORITE AUTHORS?
Brandon Sanderson is easily my favorite author. Patrick Rothfuss is another favorite. Other authors that come to mind are Cinda Williams Chima, Christopher Paolini, Brian Staveley, Orson Scott Card, Garth Nix, Phillip Pullman, J.K Rowling, Pitacus Lore, and Dakota Krout.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE BOOKS?
Basically, take any book from any of the above authors, and I probably enjoyed it. However, ones that I keep coming back to are the Kingkiller Chronicles, The Stormlight Archive, The Inheritance Cycle, and the Unhewn Throne.
WHO ARE YOUR FAVORITE LITERARY CHARACTERS?
That is tough. Its cliche to say too many but it still holds true. Kaladin from Stormlight, Kvoth from Kingkiller, and Valyn from Unhewn are probably my favorites. Kaladin speaks to a power that I wish I had. Kvoth inspires me that intelligence can get you further than raw power. And Valyn is the anti-hero, the one who struggled through tribulations and came out scarred but powerful.
IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WANT TO SHARE WITH POTENTIAL READERS?
I appreciate any of the feedback you are willing to give. Whether that be through an author’s life blood, a review, or a personal message. I will not take it for granted. Your feedback will only help me to improve. If I am ever going to nail down my group of people that want to read my stories, I need to know what you think. Tell your friends or family about my book if you enjoyed it. Reading is uncool to a lot of people. I know so many individuals that have never read a novel. Its an alien concept to them. But if you are a reader, then you know. A good book can do wonders for your mental health. Sometimes, we all need to escape to another world. If you find that feeling with my book, tell a friend. Whether they are a reader or not, tell them.
WHERE CAN WE GO TO LEARN MORE ABOUT YOU AND YOUR LITERARY WORKS?
My Facebook page is the best place to plug into what I am doing. I am making an effort to post more regularly but social media is not my strong suit. https://www.facebook.com/theoreniahcodex/
