JQM LITERARY CHAT WELCOMES John B. Rosenman
TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:
I was an English professor at Norfolk State University where I designed and taught a course in how to write Science fiction and Fantasy. I’m a former Chairman of the Board of the Horror Writers Association and have published 250 stories in places such as Weird Tales, Whitley Strieber’s Aliens, Fangoria, Galaxy, Endless Apocalypse, The Age of Wonders, and the Hot Blood erotic horror series. I’ve also published two dozen books, including SF action-adventure novels such as Beyond Those Distant Stars, Speaker of the Shakk, A Senseless Act of Beauty, Alien Dreams, and the Inspector of the Cross series (Crossroad Press). In addition, I’ve published a four-book box set, The Amazing Worlds of John B. Rosenman (MuseItUp Publishing). Plus two mainstream novels, The Best Laugh Last (McPherson & Company) and The Merry-Go-Round Man (Crossroad Press). Recently, I completed a science-fiction novel Dreamfarer which is the first in a new series.
WHAT INFLUENCED YOU TO WRITE YOUR GENRE(S)?
I was exposed to them at an early age. A free subscription to a major SciFi magazine; an older friend introduced me to Ray Bradbury and Richard Matheson. You know, The Martian Chronicles and The Shrinking Man. Into the recipe, stir terrifying EC Comics and science fiction / horror movies of the fifties. The War of the World, The Thing, Them, and so on. Plus, I think I had a tendency in that direction anyway.
WHO ARE YOUR FAVORITE AUTHORS?
Robert Silverberg, Dan Simmons, Octavia E. Butler, Stephen King, Dan Koontz, George R. R. Martin, and so many others.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE BOOKS?
Hyperion Cantos by Dan Simmons, Kirinyaga by Mike Resnick, the Game of Thrones series by George R. R. Martin, Odd Thomas by Dan Koontz, etc.
WHO ARE YOUR FAVORITE LITERARY CHARACTERS?
Katniss Everdeen, Private William Mandella, Don Quixote, Snake in Dreamsnake . . .
IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WANT TO SHARE WITH POTENTIAL READERS?
I was powerfully influenced by the Golden Age of Science Fiction, and much of my speculative fiction / science fiction reflects that sense of awe and wonder. I’m also the author of a young adult novel The Merry-Go-Round Man, about three boys growing up in the 1950s. It’s a coming-of-age story and is semi-autobiographical. Read it and see if you can find which of the three boys is a thinly disguised version of myself.
