JQM LITERARY CHAT WELCOMES Alan J. Hesse
TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:
I am the author of educational comic books, normally at MG level, though I have recently started also making picture books for the 6-8 age range. I wouldn’t call my genre fantasy, but the publicist Michael Evans, who I am a client of, suggested I contact you anyway given that I work with animal characters as the main protagonists of my stories, and there are thus certain science fiction and fantasy aspects to my books. The educational side of things is all about the natural environment, subjects such as climate change for example. My comic books are full of action, adventure and humour while also delivering scientific information and actionable tips for the readers to become leaders in their communities.
WHAT INFLUENCED YOU TO WRITE YOUR GENRE(S)?
As a kid and still today I loved the European style of comics and graphic novels, such as Tintin and Asterix, and while developing my career in conservation I also used my natural artistic abilities to create a new, fun way of transmitting information about subjects I think more people should be thinking about. My specific sub-genre (educational comics) doesn’t seem to exist as such, certainly not in the mainstream, and my aim is to change that.
WHO ARE YOUR FAVORITE AUTHORS?
Within genre they would be Goscinny and Uderzo, Hergé, Morris. Outside my own genre, Noah Gordon, Bill Bryson, William Dalyrimple, Stephen King, George McDonald Fraser.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE BOOKS?
The Flashman series, all the Asterix and Tintin albums, the Dune series, and many historical non-fiction titles, such as Why The West Rules for Now, by Ian Morris.
WHO ARE YOUR FAVORITE LITERARY CHARACTERS?
Flashman, Tarzan, Dracula.
IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WANT TO SHARE WITH POTENTIAL READERS?
My style of humour as seen in my comic books often makes use of cultural stereotypes, but these are never meant to offend. They are based on my own status as a true world citizen, having lived, worked and visited in many different parts of the world, and are meant to celebrate, not denigrate, diversity of all kinds.
