JQM LITERARY SPOTLIGHT PRESENTS Add a Cup of Chaos by Stephanie Barr

JQM LITERARY SPOTLIGHT PRESENTS Add a Cup of Chaos by Stephanie Barr

FIRST, LET’S GET TO KNOW YOU A BIT. TELL US SOMETHING UNIQUE ABOUT YOURSELF:

I am also a full time rocket scientist, single mother to two kids on the spectrum, and a bazillion cats.

WHAT IS THE GENRE AND AUDIENCE FOR THIS BOOK:

PNR/SF mashup? People who love characters and adventure will likely love this book.

WHAT WAS THE INSPIRED YOU TO WRITE THIS BOOK:

I was writing a short story for a witch anthology and the story took a tangent into the world of demons (another dimension) and I just had a blast with the world and the demons I found there. So, I ended up using the same world and some of the same characters in a novel–different MCs. You can actually read the story in a freebie called “Demon Spawn” (free everywhere but Amazon).

TELL US ABOUT YOUR BOOK:

Everyone knew that, while magic was fine, demons were evil. So evil that humans had gone to war a hundred years before and destroyed them all (only they didn’t really). All except for the last few demons–chained and emasculated– used for their power by government. The weather sorceress, Beth Parker, knew nearly all of that was a lie. She was part of the movement to get those poor bastards free when the enslaved demons literally sacrificed themselves to save the world from an alien attack. But the aliens are still out there. With a killer beam that can sterilize the earth. And an armada in case that falls through. And the only chance for the Earth to survive are those very demons the Earth tried to destroy that aren’t really dead. Now, she just has to convince the demons….

JQM LITERARY SPOTLIGHT PRESENTS The Dungeon Alaria 2: The Creator’s Daughter by Joshua Kern

JQM LITERARY SPOTLIGHT PRESENTS The Dungeon Alaria 2: The Creator’s Daughter by Joshua Kern

TDA2-Real

FIRST, LET’S GET TO KNOW YOU A BIT. TELL US SOMETHING UNIQUE ABOUT YOURSELF:

Something unique, about myself? I come from a large family with nine kids comprised of five sisters and three brothers, plus me. It was reportedly rather crowded growing up, I don’t remember though. I can’t really remember anything before I was eleven or so. I get intensely anxious about everything and holding down a job in the cooperate world was leaving me drained each night. Which led to me following my passion and becoming a writer.

WHAT IS THE GENRE AND AUDIENCE FOR THIS BOOK:

Gamelit and Portal Fantasy with a tilt towards the YA readers.

WHAT WAS THE INSPIRED YOU TO WRITE THIS BOOK:

I had just started writing the first book in the companion series ‘The Game of Gods’ and was in the middle of planning out the rest of the series, when the story burrowed into my mind. At first, I wasn’t entirely convinced that I wanted to introduce multiple worlds into the story. Then I finished that first book, and started writing Alaria, just I could get it out of my head. That didn’t really work, instead it set the tone for both series and cemented the storyline and what I wanted to do with them. I always try to make my stories different, and as one my reviewers said “Who brings and entire house with them to another world? Who does that?”

TELL US ABOUT YOUR BOOK:

“The Dungeon Alaria 2: The Creator’s Daughter”, is the second book in a duology about a young man who is taken to another world with his house. The story follows Liam as he finds love, family, and plenty of people who want to take what is his. This becomes especially prevalent when it becomes known that he has the ability to control dungeons, something that is vital to the survival of all species in the world. No spoilers, but it does have a happy ending.

JQM LITERARY SPOTLIGHT PRESENTS Royal Dragon Bind: Royal Dragon Shifters of Morocco #1 by Ava Ward

JQM LITERARY SPOTLIGHT PRESENTS Royal Dragon Bind: Royal Dragon Shifters of Morocco #1 by Ava Ward

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000446_00068]

FIRST, LET’S GET TO KNOW YOU A BIT. TELL US SOMETHING UNIQUE ABOUT YOURSELF:

Hey all, Ava Ward here! I write decadent paranormal, fantasy, and sci-fi romance, and love creating heroes with heart, heroines with punch, and engaging plots that twist and turn in inexplicable ways. I came from writing epic fantasy originally (under the name Jean Lowe Carlson), and have never been satisfied with formulaic romance. I strive to create characters that are deeply human – even when they’re dragons, fae, sirens, fallen angels, or beautiful demons! Before I began writing, I sang opera professionally, practiced as a primary care physician, and even did some bellydancing! Now I use all those experiences in my books, and even narrate my own audiobooks. 🙂

WHAT IS THE GENRE AND AUDIENCE FOR THIS BOOK:

The Royal Dragon Shifters of Morocco series is spicy, slow-burn reverse harem dragon shifter paranormal fantasy romance with HFN endings – perfect for fans of KF Breene, Charlene Hartnady, Ruby Dixon, Renee Rose, Ava Mason, and The Dragon Kings.

WHAT WAS THE INSPIRED YOU TO WRITE THIS BOOK:

I originally started writing epic fantasy under the name Jean Lowe Carlson because I had a long love of the genre. But the more I wrote, the more I discovered I LOVED writing all the spicy relationships and character development between love interests in my series. And voila! My Ava Ward line was born. Now I do both, but I absolutely adore writing on the fantasy romances. The Royal Dragon Shifters of Morocco series was inspired by a walk my husband and I took, and had the whole series brainstormed in 45 minutes! It’s evolved into a 9-book affair (can’t escape my epic fantasy roots!) and involves a parallel fae world to ours that will probably spark numerous series to come. 🙂

TELL US ABOUT YOUR BOOK:

The Royal Dragon Shifters of Morocco series begins when a mystery billionaire gives the main character Layla an irresistible offer to come work for him. She’s a PhD graduate bartending to make rent, and he’s a ridiculously hot billionaire Dragon from a fae realm, hunted by a mysterious darkness. When he purchases her a priceless artifact with an offer to work for him, she knows his offer will change her life. But his world holds dangerous secrets; a passionate adventure that will Bind her to him magically if she accepts. Not to mention opening her own dire magic and meeting a number of other hot Dragon billionaires along the way…

FIRST, LET’S GET TO KNOW YOU A BIT. TELL US SOMETHING UNIQUE ABOUT YOURSELF:

I’m from Germany, from the beautiful Black Forest area. I live in a small townhouse with my loving husband, my wonderful teenage daughter and my eighteen years old tomcat. To pay my bills, I work part time as a lab technician in cancer research. I only started writing in October 2018, but loved to read all my life. Maybe you wonder, why does someone from Germany write in English? I still remember the first English book I ever read. Staying in the USA as an exchange student when I was sixteen, I picked a random book at a public library, ending up with “Dragonsong” by Anne McCaffrey. It was the beginning of my passion for stories reaching beyond the confines of the mortal human world, and also the beginning of my love for a language that’s so much more expressive than my native tongue. When finally risking the step from reader to writer, the language was out of question. Feel free to join me in my world of fantasy, paranormal, adventure, with a bit of romance. When I’m not writing, I like playing computer games or watching crime series on TV. I’m also part of the parents’ council at my daughter’s school and a committee member of the garden club around the corner.

JQM LITERARY SPOTLIGHT PRESENTS Bane of Ashkarith by Ariel Paiement

JQM LITERARY SPOTLIGHT PRESENTS Bane of Ashkarith by Ariel Paiement

FIRST, LET’S GET TO KNOW YOU A BIT. TELL US SOMETHING UNIQUE ABOUT YOURSELF:

I’m a Christian fantasy and sci-fi author who strives to craft engaging fiction that presents real world issues, Christian themes, and Christian morals through the vehicle of fantasy. Something unique about me is that I have created my own language (grammar and all with a slowly growing vocabulary) for the world of Alcardia where Bane of Ashkarith takes place. I love languages and started learning other languages all the way back in third or fourth grade when my mom did a history module on Ancient Egypt (I was homeschooled), and I took the hieroglyph page and taught myself all of them then found more on the internet. Yup. I’m a nerd. Keeps life interesting, at least for me.

WHAT IS THE GENRE AND AUDIENCE FOR THIS BOOK:

This book is written at a reading level appropriate for anyone who is at least thirteen. It is, however, written with the whole family in mind, and the idea is that it would be an acceptable story for any age, though younger children might struggle to understand some concepts. The genre is solidly high fantasy with an archaeological flavor mixed in.

Bane of Ashkarith Promo Image 1

WHAT WAS THE INSPIRED YOU TO WRITE THIS BOOK:

As with most of my books, a combination of things. First, I had already written a short story in this world for an anthology that was coming out after this book was set to release. That short story was about Bane and Rith’s love story, and this book features them (in a round about way, just as most of the books set on Alcardia often do). I loved the characters, but I also knew where their story would end because I was simultaneously working on world-building for another book my friend and I started together. In a way, I suppose Bane of Ashkarith never would’ve come about if not for the summer I spent rooming with my friend and working on campus prior to my senior year of college. My friend and I had the kernel of an idea and began building the story out from there. We built an entire mythology (or at least the bare bones of it) for the world’s origin, the gods and goddesses the various religious groups would worship, and the magic system that would be used. Initially, those elements took a back seat to the story. We didn’t do much with it over the summer, though I spent time at work doodling sketches of the characters and building backstories for my part of the cast or for the gods and goddesses we’d created. But we only wrote one or two chapters by the end of the entire summer. When senior year started, my friend was too busy to really write, and I didn’t want to write without her, so I spent my time worldbuilding instead, and that is where Bane of Ashkarith’s idea really came to life. Then I saw a prompt on Wattpad for their yearly Open Novella Contest that challenged writers to write a 20-40K word novella on myths of the old world where over time the truth has become a lie and the lie has become the truth. I loved the idea, but instead of doing it with myths of Earth, which was probably more what the creators of the prompts had in mind, I went with mythology from Alcardia, and that’s when the archaeology, Bane and Rith, Kaidan and Zerua, and a lost city all ended up coming together.

Bane of Ashkarith Promo Image 4

TELL US ABOUT YOUR BOOK:

This book is predominantly about the struggle between what people want to believe and what is ultimately true. Though it isn’t in the reader’s face in a preachy way, it is a natural outgrowth from the goal Kaidan and Zerua have from the beginning: discovering the truth no matter what the cost to them will be. As Seekers, Alcardia’s version of archaeologists, their job is to learn the truth using various historical relics and dig sites. They set out to do just that with a dig site where a huge battle between the “gods” supposedly occurred, and on that site, they make a discovery that sets them off on a journey across continents and through a haunted, abandoned city to find out what really happened two-thousand years in their past. They find the truth, but sadly, it doesn’t align with what the rest of the world feels should be true or wants to believe, and they find themselves with a dilemma: tell the world that there is an absolute truth that doesn’t align with their beliefs or keep quiet. Sharing what they found could cost them everything, even their own lives. Though this theme occurred naturally from the book’s plot itself, when I started to see it emerging, I definitely played it up because I feel it’s a very important theme that presents an even more important question to get our young people thinking about: is there an absolute truth, and what is the truth worth? Additionally, the theme’s presentation is meant to get people thinking about the world around them, just as much of my fiction is. My goal with this particular book was to challenge people to examine themselves. How far will you go to have the truth? Are you content with believing a lie because it’s accepted by society or more comfortable for you? How far will you or others go to remain blind to a truth that isn’t comfortable or pretty? Is the status quo and the lies it may contain really better than facing reality? These are questions that we and our young people are faced with on an ever-increasing basis these days, and they’re questions we need to take a serious look at. To me, that’s what fiction is about. It isn’t there just to entertain. It’s also there to provoke us to thought or even to action and to teach us something about the world around us. That can be used in both a beneficial way and in a harmful way, and my hope is to provide more fantasy rooted in Christian philosophies and Biblical concepts even if the story isn’t directly related to Christianity. I strive for that in all of my work. This one’s basis is in learning what truth is, and my hope and prayer is that it will provoke people to reevaluate their lives and their ideas about truth while simultaneously providing an easy, fun read for the whole family.

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:

I’m from Germany, from the beautiful Black Forest area. I live in a small townhouse with my loving husband, my wonderful teenage daughter and my eighteen years old tomcat. To pay my bills, I work part time as a lab technician in cancer research. I started writing in October 2018. So far, I’ve written a trilogy and been part of the “31 Overlook Hotel” book collaboration featuring 31 authors. I’m working on my fourth novel “Virgin’s Curse” right now, and there are two short stories to be published soon. Feel free to join me in my world of fantasy, paranormal, adventure, with a bit of romance. Here’s a bit more about my “Angels and Demons” trilogy. Book one is “Fallen Angels” The protagonist of book one is Bela, son of a Fallen Angel and a mortal woman. He’s lived for centuries. For one misstep in his youth, he was cursed and powers he had not yet learned to use were ripped away by a Guardian Angel. As a cursed half Demon, he is an outcast living outside of today’s society, withdrawn to a safe oasis created for himself and others like him. After centuries, he finds his first human friend, his closed heart gradually opening to accept friendship and love in his life. When an old nemesis in new guise rises again to threaten today’s way of life, the future of the world is on razor’s edge. Characters never meant to be heroes are forced to suddenly embrace a new and terrifying role. Will there be enough time for Bela to come to terms with the past, to accept the changes, to embrace newfound abilities? Will it be enough to tip the scales in favor of the unsuspecting human world? Book two is “Angels Descendants” The protagonist of book two is Jason Tim, a young man who has denied his heritage all his life, calling his father a nutcase, running away from home. Until one day, something happens that turns his whole life upside down. He suddenly finds himself on The Chariot, the ancient vessel of the Gods, a place only known from history books. Book three is “Angels Nemesis” The protagonist of book three is Kreon, newly turned True Angel and also Lucifer’s son. Lucifer is hiding, waiting for a new chance to attack the Angel community. Archangel Gabriel has vanished. Kreon gets shackled by an Archangel’s command to kill his father. Will he be forced to comply, or is there another way? An ancient prophecy pushes Kreon to his limits as he tries to change fate, risking the extinction of the entire Angel community.

WHAT INFLUENCED YOU TO WRITE YOUR GENRE(S)?

Basically, I write what I like to read. I never consciously chose the genre. I started writing, and the genre picked me, not the other way around. Actually, it’s not only one category. I asked my editor, and he said it was fantasy, paranormal, adventure with a bit of romance. So, seeing it as multi-genre is probably accurate.

tulpen+cover+ADT1

WHO ARE YOUR FAVORITE AUTHORS?

The authors that influenced me most when I was young were probably Anne McCaffrey, Marion Zimmer-Bradley, Jean M. Auel, Stephen King, Dean R. Koontz, to name a few. My more recent favorite authors are Aimee Easterling and Becca André, in addition to some wonderful author colleagues I’m friends with and of course try to read their work. That’s JA Stone, Andreea Pryde, Catrin Russell, Alexa Wayne, Hargrove Perth and some more. Sorry to those I didn’t mention…

BFLC0618

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE BOOKS?

The complete “Dragonriders of Pern” series by Anne McCaffrey The “Final Formula” Series by Becca Andre The “Dresden Files” by Jim Butcher The first books of Catrin Russell’s “PRIME Series” are the burner! And I have to admit, I do like “Harry Potter” and “Twilight” 🙂

WHO ARE YOUR FAVORITE LITERARY CHARACTERS?

With “Literary Characters,” do you mean characters from old, important literature? I don’t think I have any. I’m not fond of reading this oh so important literature that’s required at school. Except for “1984” and “Brave New World” I hated them all… Not my world, sorry. Of the most recently read books, I’m currently in love with the Scion Prime Samael Fahd, Demon (from Catrin Russell’s PRIME Series) but I don’t have a long-time favorite character.
