JQM LITERARY SPOTLIGHT PRESENTS The Road to Montfaucon by M. J. Neary

JQM LITERARY SPOTLIGHT PRESENTS The Road to Montfaucon by M. J. Neary

FIRST, LET’S GET TO KNOW YOU A BIT. TELL US SOMETHING UNIQUE ABOUT YOURSELF:

I am an only child of classical musicians, born in Central Europe, living in the States since the early 90s. Fluent in Russian, Spanish and French. In addition to being an immigrant, I’m an Aspie – diagnosed at 27. I guess you can say this chick knows a thing or two about being an outsider. I love exploring military, political and historical disasters – with a supernatural twist.

WHAT IS THE GENRE AND AUDIENCE FOR THIS BOOK:

“The Road to Montfaucon” is a paranormal thriller, a contemporary sequel to “The Hunchback of Notre-Dame”

WHAT WAS THE INSPIRED YOU TO WRITE THIS BOOK:

I have always been a huge fan of Victor Hugo and of the Notre-Dame cathedral. The fire of 2019 prompted me to write this novel, incorporating plot twists from Hugo’s masterpiece into modern Parisian realities.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR BOOK:

Modern Paris. The fire at Notre-Dame has unleashed an eerie force and awakened the ghosts of Victor Hugo’s novel. Dr. Molendino, a jaded psychologist with a penchant for the occult, finds himself ejected from the clinical community for publishing controversial articles on the subject of past lives. To his colleagues he is a heretic, who compromises the prestige of the clinic. After losing his job he immerses himself in private practice and research. Among his patients is Thomas Dimanche, a young journalist who suffers from dysmorphophobia and despite being handsome, considers himself hideous, avoiding human contact. Thomas makes a living by hosting a radio show called Parisian Toll, a criminal review, where he often features one of the city’s most gruesome crimes — the murder of an indie performer Annaïs Guybertot. The teenage girl was found strangled in the basement of an underground nightclub aptly called Montfaucon. With help from an experimental drug, the doctor and his patient dive into a hallucinatory world where a deformed bell ringer and his arrogant master rival for the heart of a gypsy dancer. Will they stop in time, or will they repeat the fate of Hugo’s characters?

JQM LITERARY SPOTLIGHT PRESENTS The Quest of the Thirteen by John DeFilippis

JQM LITERARY SPOTLIGHT PRESENTS The Quest of the Thirteen by John DeFilippis

FIRST, LET’S GET TO KNOW YOU A BIT. TELL US SOMETHING UNIQUE ABOUT YOURSELF:

I am a lifelong educator who always dreamed of becoming an author. After losing my job following the Great Recession, I finally made the time to pursue that dream and ultimately fulfilled it. Crossroad Press agreed to publish my first novel and signed me to a contract to write the rest of the series. I went on to write three more novels and complete my quadrilogy before returning to work full-time in 2015.

WHAT IS THE GENRE AND AUDIENCE FOR THIS BOOK:

The genre for this book is best categorized as Christian fantasy fiction. But I know of many non-Christians who read my series and still enjoyed it. So I think it’s fair to say that my book is not only for fans of Christian fantasy fiction, but fans of generic fantasy fiction as well.

WHAT WAS THE INSPIRED YOU TO WRITE THIS BOOK:

My Christian faith and love of epic fantasy fiction inspired me to write this book. I’m a big fan of Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings trilogy as well as The Hobbit, so my goal has always been to write my own fantasy fiction series. Tolkien once said that The Lord of the Rings was “fundamentally a Catholic work, unconsciously so at first but consciously in the revision.” My goal was to write a fantasy fiction series that was fundamentally Christian and consciously so from the very beginning. I’d like to think I fulfilled that goal.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR BOOK:

A battle-weary kingdom in chaos. A people losing their faith. A dying king with no heir, the rules of succession tied to an ancient legend. Salvation may lie in a chronicle discovered amongst the dusty tomes in the library of the scribes. The passage describes a medallion of enormous power that holds the key not only to saving the kingdom but to identifying the future king. Thirteen loyal subjects are selected and trained for the arduous quest to retrieve the medallion. Together they work against nearly impossible odds—rugged terrain, mythical beasts, death-defying adventures, and, worst of all, betrayal in their ranks. In the tradition of J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis, The Quest of the Thirteen brings to mind the adventure and excitement of Jason and the Argonauts, The Odyssey, and the Arthurian legend of the Holy Grail. Ultimately The Quest of the Thirteen is about an extraordinary effort to resurrect a kingdom and its people in a world where evil and unearthly challenges lurk around every corner, and where the real heroes fearlessly confront evil and meet those challenges head-on.

JQM LITERARY SPOTLIGHT PRESENTS Steel, Blood & Fire by Allan Batchelder

I was a stand up comedian throughout the Pacific Northwest for nine years. I’ve performed a LOT of Shakespeare.

WHAT IS THE GENRE AND AUDIENCE FOR THIS BOOK:

Well, it’s the first in a five novel series. I call it epic grimdark.

WHAT WAS THE INSPIRED YOU TO WRITE THIS BOOK:

Like many writers of fantasy, I have decades of Dungeons & Dragons under my belt, and I suppose I wanted to ascend from DM to author, so I could have complete, maniacal control over all the characters!

TELL US ABOUT YOUR BOOK:

Here’s the official blurb: On the march, around the campfire, and in the taverns, they tell incredible stories about Tarmun Vykers, the Reaper – how he’s never been cut in battle, how he once defeated hundreds of men by himself, how he exterminated an entire people over an insult. These stories make Vykers seem like a god, but he is a man, an arrogant, ruthless and bloodthirsty man. For all that, he may be the only thing standing between the human race and utter annihilation at the hands of the mad wizard who calls himself the End-of-All-Things. Against this backdrop, smaller, lesser folks struggle to fulfill their own destinies, folks like Aoife, burdened with a secret so dark she is driven to do the unimaginable and seek an alliance with fey powers no mortal has ever encountered.

WHERE CAN WE PURCHASE YOUR BOOK:

Well, you can literally order it anywhere books are sold, although the Zon (Amazon) is probably easiest.

Notna-Small

(The Above is a Piece the Author Commissioned From Artist Kendall Goode)

WHAT WAS THE INSPIRED YOU TO WRITE THIS BOOK:

Jack Corbett, the main character, was the first original character I created when I was still in high school. Over the years, as my genre fiction tastes grew from simple superhero comic books to such stories as Spawn, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Tomb Raider, Notna grew accordingly. A high school friend, Anton Kromoff, collaborated with me on this story, offering suggestions on new characters, story ideas, and the like. As thanks, the book — and the mystical gem upon which it’s named — are named in honor of him (Notna is Anton backwards).

TELL US ABOUT YOUR BOOK:

Archaeologist Dr. Jack Corbett is this generation’s Chosen One, the new host for the Gem of Notna as foretold by the prophecy in the Narazniyan Scrolls. Blessed with extraordinary powers, Jack now finds himself thrust in the middle of a centuries-old war between the Divine and the Underworld for the fate of the world. Seraphus, ruler of the Underworld, sees the gem as his way of turning the tide in the war. Jack must protect the gem and defeat Seraphus, with the help of a diverse cast of characters — including a young woman serving as a mystical conduit and a young warrior brought back after centuries of rest.

JQM LITERARY SPOTLIGHT PRESENTS Chronicles of Lorrek Box Set 1 by Kelly Blanchard

JQM LITERARY SPOTLIGHT PRESENTS Chronicles of Lorrek Box Set 1 by Kelly Blanchard

FIRST, LET’S GET TO KNOW YOU A BIT. TELL US SOMETHING UNIQUE ABOUT YOURSELF:

Known as the Muse in the writing community, I was born in Texas but lives in Florida with my husband, who is often the one who tries to saves characters lives by convincing me not to kill them. How successful he is–that’s up for debate. Although stories have always been a major part of my life, I only began writing seriously when I was twelve. I focused on honing my skills and finding my writing style. Later, I attended a community college, studying English. As I earned my degree, I worked as a tutor and a teaching assistant, learning teaching techniques along the way. These days, I use those techniques as I mentor aspiring writers and encourage them along their way. I am a huge fantasy fan but I also love science fiction. I have created a massive universe with several series already written and many more planned to write–all in the same universe with familiar characters, and everything is connected. I enjoy the challenge of seeing what exactly happens when you pit medieval magic against high technology, and I seek to fully explore the shades of gray in all her characters–good and bad. It’s quite an adventure for sure.

WHAT IS THE GENRE AND AUDIENCE FOR THIS BOOK:

Epic fantasy and science fiction

WHAT WAS THE INSPIRED YOU TO WRITE THIS BOOK:

It was initially inspired by Loki from Marvel’s Thor movie. I really liked the character and wondered, “What if he was actually a good guy but just completely misunderstood?” So I based Lorrek off of Loki and changed his story entirely. There’s no norse mythology in my books or anything like that, but that is where the initial inspiration came from.
